CVACL operates as the local designated Area Agency on Aging, providing traditional Older American Act. Programming includes Comprehensive Assessment, Meals on Wheels for Seniors, Dial-A-Ride Medical Transportation, Information and Referral, Virginia Insurance Counseling and Assistance, Care Coordination, Weatherization, and a range of other services focused on health and wellness for older adults and person disabilities.

Health and Wellness

  • “Take Charge” Care Transition Intervention Program – provides support, ensuring a smooth transition from hospital to home or healthcare facility.
  • Chronic Disease Self-Management Program – focuses on solutions to problems caused by living with ongoing pain, fatigue, and difficult emotions.
  • Diabetes Self-Management Program – helps adults better manage diabetes or pre-diabetes, meal planning, foot care, stress management, etc.
  • Healthy IDEAS – the program includes screening and assessing depressive symptoms, education about depressions, and self-care.
  • A Matter of Balance – designed to reduce the fear of falling and develop strategies to lower the risk of falling and increase activity levels.

Nutrition

  • Meals on Wheels for Seniors – delivers nutritious, well-balanced meals to individuals who cannot leave home or prepare a meal for themselves.

  • Checking Service – services offers ongoing by-monthly contact by phone to ensure individuals maintain physical and psychological well-being.
  • Long-Term Care Ombudsman – this program offers a free and confidential way for caregivers or residents in long-term care facilities or receiving long-term care to voice their concerns and have their complaints addressed.

Mobility Matters 

  • Dial-A-Ride – provides people 60 and older transportation to grocery stores, medical appointments, medical care (therapy, dialysis, etc), and pharmacies.
  • New Freedom Transportation – allows adults 21+ living with a disability transportation to medical appointments, grocery stores, etc.

Housing Services  

  • There’s No Place Like Home – offers three types of housing programs to improve housing conditions, improve energy efficiency, and support safety.
  • Weatherization Assistance Program – provides energy-saving measures necessary to make your home comfortable and affordable. Approved Applicants living in Amherst, Appomattox, or Bedford can receive this service.
  • Emergency Home Accessibility and Repair Program – provides funds to assist with physical repairs that improve housing conditions. Approved Applicants living in Amherst, Appomattox, and Bedford can receive this service.
  • Residential Repair Program – provides funds to homeowners and tenants with structural and accessibility repairs. Approved Applicants living in Amherst, Appomattox, Campbell, Lynchburg, and Bedford can receive this service.
